Brie Larson’s The Marvels, which is the sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, premiered on November 10 in the United States. To appeal to a larger international audience, the film also stars South Korean heartthrob, Park Seo Joon. Portraying the role of Prince Yan, Park Seo Joon stars opposite Brie as her alien husband in his Hollywood debut. Despite the seemingly hefty role, the actor’s total screen time equated to only 2 minutes and 47 seconds.
A netizen proclaimed, “His screen time is less than the time it takes to make instant ramen!” Other fans also chimed in, voicing their disappointment in the false advertisement.
Since Park Seo Joon was advertised as having a bigger role and was even referred to as part of the “Marvel family,” many believed he would have a heavier role. Due to Park Seo Joon’s meager role, many of the actor’s fans are disappointed.
The Marvels received mediocre ratings from entertainment review websites, including Rotten Tomatoes and ScreenCrush. One review from Rotten Tomatoes expressed, “If you thought Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Eternals were the poorest productions of the Marvel universe, you’re in for a rude awakening with The Marvels!” ScreenCrush also shared similar sentiments, calling it “the most confusing Marvel movie.”
In addition to the reviews, it was also predicted that the film will do poorly in the box office. Originally estimated to gross over US$75 million in its opening weekend, the movie only grossed US$46.1 million in the United States and Canada, becoming the lowest opening box office in Marvel history. However, worldwide box office receipts grossed a total of US$108.9 million.
