Louis Rees-Zammit’s official NFL position and shirt number confirmed

by cannaorganicgreenscam

Louis Rees-Zammit’s position for the Kansas City Chiefs has been confirmed with the Welshman also picking out his new shirt number while visiting the Super Bowl champions’ stadium.

The former Wales rugby star put pen to paper on a three year deal with the Chiefs on Friday after emerging as a standout talent in the NFL’s International Player Pathway Programme. Despite never playing the sport before quitting rugby in January, Rees-Zammit impressed scouts at the Pro Day in Florida earlier this month, with more than 12 teams interested in signing him.

The 23-year-old could not hide his delight at joining the NFL giants, who won back to back Super Bowls earlier this year, as he was pictured signing the contract surrounded by his family. His next job will be to compete with the off-season squad in order to earn a place in the final 53-man roster for the 2024 season which begins in September.

While few details of his contract – worth reportedly in the region of $900,000 a year – have been released so far, the position he will be competing in has seemingly been confirmed. There had been some debate about where on the field he would line up as he had been training to play a hybrid role of both running back and wide receiver during the IPP programme.

However, he has been officially listed as a running back by the Chiefs, as he joins the likes of Isiah Pacheco and La’Mical Perine in the side’s backfield.

Upon signing his new contract, Rees-Zammit was shown around the team’s Arrowhead Stadium with a video being posted on the Chief’s social media platforms of the Welsh star taking it all in. Walking on to the field with his family, he looks around at the stands in disbelief and remarks “it’s huge” with a laugh.

He also took the opportunity to pick out a shirt number, with a photo showing him holding a jersey branding his name and the number nine aloft in the Chiefs’ changing room, in front of a stall that also bore ‘Rees-Zammit 9’. That stall is between wide receiver Justyn Ross and three times Super Bowl champion linebacker Darius Harris.

The Chiefs briefly shared the photo on their social platforms before deleting it.

If Rees-Zammit is to wear the nine shirt going forward, he will become only the third Chiefs running back ever to wear a single digit jersey. As a rugby player, the former Gloucester man predominantly wore 14, which he continued to wear during the IPP programme, while his father Joseph wore number 89 for the Cardiff Tigers.

As of the 2023 NFL season, running backs are allowed to wear jersey numbers between 0 and 49 and 80 and 89.
