Former Barcelona head coach Quique Setién has revealed that he is still awaiting part of his financial settlement from his time at the club. Setién, who took charge of the Catalan giants in 2020, recently shared that the issue remains unresolved, despite the time that has passed since his departure.
Short stint at Barcelona
Setién was appointed as Barcelona’s manager in January 2020, following an impressive period in charge of Real Betis. The Spaniard was entrusted with leading one of La Liga’s biggest teams, but his tenure at Camp Nou was short-lived. In August of the same year, after only eight months in the role, Setién was sacked. His dismissal came in the wake of a devastating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, a result that shocked the footballing world.
Ongoing financial settlement
Though Setién’s time with Barcelona ended in 2020, financial matters between him and the club remain unresolved. In an interview with Cadena SER, the 65-year-old coach disclosed that he has not yet received all of the compensation owed to him. Setién noted that a final payment is still due, with a deadline set for the end of this month—nearly four years after his dismissal.
Setién speaks out
Speaking on the financial dispute, Setién emphasized his patience but pointed out the unusual length of time it has taken for Barcelona to fulfill their obligations. Citing the Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, he confirmed, “I have not yet finished receiving the money from Barça, but I still have a deadline that expires at the end of this month.” As the deadline approaches, Setién’s case highlights ongoing financial challenges for Barcelona as they continue to address debts and unsettled payments.
