Police to arraign driver who killed two sweepers in Lagos

The hit-and-run driver who killed two sweepers of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) at their duty post on the Gbagada-Oshodi Expressway on Monday has surrendered himself to the Police.

This was disclosed on Tuesday by the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin.

“The suspect who drove the vehicle with number plate EPE 984 DV turned himself in to the police on Monday evening,” Hundeyin told Channels Television.

“He turned himself in yesterday (Monday) and he will be arraigned for manslaughter possibly today (Tuesday).”

Two female officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) were on Monday knocked down and killed by a vehicle around the Charlie Boy area inward Gbagada, Lagos State.

According to an eyewitness, the two female officials of LAWMA were carrying out their duty around the Charlie Boy area inward Gbagada, Lagos State when they were hit by the vehicle.

The two LAWMA officials, whose identities have not yet been released, were pronounced dead at the scene.

LAWMA thereafter confirmed the death of the two sanitation workers in a statement, expressing their condolences to the families of the deceased.

The agency also appealed to motorists to drive with caution and avoid such incidents from happening again.

“We wish to appeal to motorists for the umpteenth time, to drive with utmost caution on the highways, to avoid sad incidents like this happening to our sanitation workers or anyone in the course of their legitimate duties,” LAWMA said.

“The public is urged to remain calm as appropriate steps are being taken and necessary measures put in place.”
