An expectant mother died after allegedly being administered blood of the wrong group on Tuesday at MKCG Hospital in Berhampur of Ganjam.
The deceased woman was identified as Sonali Nayak, who belonged to Diandein village near Rambha locality of the district.
According to sources, Sonali was admitted to the government-run health facility, after she experienced severe labour pain. Her condition further deteriorated after she gave birth to a male child in the hospital.

The doctor treating her had initially advised her to take ‘O +ve’ blood. However, he administered ‘O -ve’ blood instead, leading to the patient’s death, family members alleged.
On the other hand, the MKCG Hospital superintendent and Blood Bank authorities refuted the charges. The victim died due to excessive bleeding, they asserted.
“A PPH (bleeding) usually occurs following a delivery. However, this patient did not have bleeding after childbirth and rather she bled after an hour. Blood transfusion and other medical treatments were provided, but she could not be saved,” Head of the Department (HoD) Gynecology Prof Sanghamitra Mohapatra told mediapersons.
When asked about a mismatch of blood group, HoD Mohapatra expressed, “We verify the blood group of a patient before giving blood in the hospital. Our blood grouping is very much authentic. As per our blood bank reports, the patient’s blood group was ‘O -ve’. Accordingly, she was given ‘O -ve’ blood.”
“The woman’s family had conducted blood grouping elsewhere beforehand, which reported ‘O +ve’. We gave her blood as per our blood bank reports,” the HoD added.
