A man who charged pro-Israel demonstrators in Newton MA and got shot for his troubles has been identified as Caleb Gannon.
Gannon, 31 of Newton, was shot by Scott Hayes, a veteran who he attacked during the protest on Thursday evening.
Hayes, of Framingham, was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon as well as violation of a constitutional right causing injury, following a violent confrontation.
He was released on Friday with bail set at $5,000 cash with the condition that he abide by a daily curfew of home confinement between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.
He is also required to wear a GPS monitoring device.
“He was also ordered to stay away from and have no contact with the injured party, to stay away from the city of Newton, and to not possess any dangerous weapons. His license to carry has also been suspended.” Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Friday.
The assailant suffered life-threatening injuries from the shooting but is expected to survive. Ryan charged him with assault and battery.
His name was eventually released in charging documents but prior to that, the Daily Wire’s Kassy Akiva exposed his identity online.

Gannon saw a group of pro-Israel demonstrators gathered near Washington and Harvard streets in the Newtonville neighbourhood and decided to exchange words with those gathered.
According to the DA’s office, he then ran across the street and tackled one of the protestors, Scott Hayes, to the ground.
An altercation followed during which Hayes shot Gannon, who was hit in the abdomen. Hayes and others provided him with aid before he was transported to an area hospital.
Gannon, according to Kassy Akiva on X, a Daily Wire journalist, has a troubling history of anti-semitic rants, rants against the U.S. government and generally troubling content posted all across his social media.

“Caleb Gannon, the man who tackled Scott Hayes and was shot, has a X history of calling for the destruction of America and says he does not condemn Hamas,” Akiva wrote in a tweet identifying the agitator.

“No wonder he’s the one the DA kisses up to and not protecting the veteran who was attacked right?” one X user wrote in reaction to the revelation.
“Can you imagine having extreme points of view that make you a pariah within your own blood family and not even considering that you might be in the wrong? Instead say that they are all “Ghouls”?” another reaction read.
Scott Hayes according to reports is a contractor with National Grid and an Iraq war vet.
“This is a textbook case of self-defense, and when this case is over, Mr. Hayes will be cleared of all charges,” his attorney Glenn MacKinley said following his release on bail.
The case is adjourned to November 4th.
