Assistant Commissioner of Police, Gary McKenzie.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Gary McKenzie, head of the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB), has disputed claims that the relationship between the police and civilians is at an all-time low.
McKenzie emphasised that while there is room for improvement, significant strides have been made in strengthening police-citizen ties.
He was responding to a claim by a taxi operator at last Wednesday night’s virtual meeting of the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS), that the relationship between the police and civilians is at an all-time low.
“As it relates to police-citizen relationship being at an all-time low, I would differ with that,” asserted McKenzie.
“As a matter of fact, the kind of commendation that the police force is getting in general is contrary to what you are saying, and on a lot of specific issues,” added McKenzie.
The senior lawman attributed the progress to “the effort that is being made by the police force and its leadership, and the kind of superior training, development and interaction that have come in recent times.”
However, he acknowledged that there is still work to be done in those areas, to further improve the relationship between citizens and the police.
